My name is pasang dolma and I am professional singer. I am pursing this art in Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts, Dharamsala. My school record shows that I was born in 1964 to a parent, whose face I have not seen. From my childhood, I was raised in Tibetan children village, a small refugee school in the state of Himachal Pradesh.
I wonder whether my passion for singing was an accident of just plain natural karmic instinct. At the age of three, polio struck me and since than I have lost the use of my left leg. With th9is misfortune at hand, the love for music and song grew even stronger in me and I just nurtured this newfound passion. “ For me, I wonder whether this was an escape route, an _expression or a way out from the daily agony of my crippled state, but I have this longing to sing”.
At the age of eight, I got the opportunity to sing in public for the first time, before the students and staff of TCV. Patting my back Mrs. Jetsun Pema La, the president of the TCV School showered accolades on me after the program. This small gesture of appreciation from her gave me the strength; confidence and somewhat restored the lost pride in me.
During the free hour, I used the experiment with my voice and sing countless meaningless songs, just to explore the depth of my vocal.
In 1980,in my late teens, Mr. Jamyang Norbu la, and then the Director of Tibetan institute of Performing Arts (TIPA ) called me to join this cultural institution. I jumped at the very opportunity. Thus, begins my formal singing career, polishing my skill and etiquette along the way.
At TIPA, I learned my first song from late Gyen (master) Luitse la, an old master from Tibet, and the first song he taught me was “ Toeshay Dawai Shonu”. He was specialist in Nagma and Toeshay ( Tibetan classical song ) and was credited with role of reviving this classical song in the exiled community. I still remember the panache and the etiquette along the way.
My most memorable performance until date came in the year 1992. For the first time in my life, I got an opportunity to sing before His Holiness the Dalai lama, during a public gathering at Tsuglhag khang, titled aptly “ nga yi tsewai doegar” (my beloved art), a duet with Mr. Jamyang Choden.
In 2003, during the free sprite festival, the public adjudged me as the best female vocalist in Exiled Tibetan community. This gesture from the public humbled me and I would like to dedicate this award to late Mr. Luitse la and Ama Ane lak ( a female singer from Tibet) whose work inspires me, even today.
I have maintained that same passion for the songs when I first joined TIPA and continue to do so. I have served 19th year in the institution. On May 21st 2006, I take a leave from TIPA and become an independent singer. I have preformed many live concerts at Canada, Swiss and Japan. In India, dharamsala, Mumbai, ladhak, manali, and byalakuppe etc.
Most of my songs that I sing and practice are the classical Tibetan songs “ Nagma and Toeshay”. I believe these songs are the reflection of an ancient culture and represent the true musical spirits and ingenuity of the Tibetan people. I sincerely hope that younger would take time to reflect upon these works and carry on this beautiful tradition. A musical gift for a new Tibet…
